Monopoli is one of Italy’s hidden gems. Known for its lively bars and nightlife, the town’s cathedral and the Castello di Carlo are also worth visiting. For self-catering Monopoli’s vibrant, weekly market (Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 7.30am) is the best place to pick up delicious local produce to cook at home. Alberobello, (30 minutes) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as one of the centres of Italy’s Slow Food Movement. The town is a must-see. It is famous for its traditional Trulli houses and excellent restaurants. All along this stretch of coast, visitors will find some of Italy’s most beautiful beaches. North of Monopoli is Polignano a Mare (17 minutes) which offers excellent snorkelling in its clear waters. For history lovers, the archaeological museum at Egnazi (17 minutes) offers a fascinating glimpse into Puglia’s interesting past.
