Koper was once part of the Venetian Empire, and this has left its mark on the town. The narrow streets of the historical centre offer some excellent restaurants and cafés. There are many wonderful beaches along the coast, including Zusterna Beach (3-minute drive) and the beach at Punta Grossa nature reserve (20 minutes). Further along the coast is the charming harbour town of Izola (10 minutes). One of the oldest settlements on the coast, it is packed with history and has a lively marina. Visitors can hire kayaks and paddle boards to explore this stunning coastline. Away from the coast, the area is famous for its rock formations, caves and subterranean rivers. Skocjan Caves (25 minutes) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a spectacular series of caves, stalagmites and stalactites. For self-catering, try Koper’s daily farmers’ market. Here you will find the best, freshest local ingredients. The closest airport is Trieste, Italy, which is a 50-minute drive. Alternatively, Ljubljana Airport is 1 hour and 25 minutes. If you are arriving by train, Koper station is a 4-minute drive.
