The area

Once a scatter of farming hamlets, Courchevel was laid out as a purpose-built ski resort from the 1940s and has grown into the most refined corner of the Three Valleys, the world's largest linked ski area. Its villages climb the mountainside of Savoie's Tarentaise valley, each known by a number that loosely marks its altitude. The pistes are famously wide, gently graded and meticulously groomed, with a north-facing aspect that preserves snow quality through the season. Above the runs sit forested slopes, the landmark altiport carved into the mountainside and the Bellecote sector, prized for its long descents. Everything here is considered, from the lift system to the boutiques of the Croisette, and a chalet places you inside that polish with the scale and seclusion of a private home.

Where to stay

Courchevel is really several villages, each with its own character, and our collection of more than 370 chalets and apartments spans all of them. Courchevel 1850 is the highest and most exclusive, home to designer boutiques, palace hotels and the finest chalets. Courchevel 1650, also called Moriond, is sunnier and more relaxed, popular with families and those who prefer a calmer base with excellent intermediate skiing on its doorstep. The Bellecote area near 1850 offers prime ski-in, ski-out positions close to the slopes and lifts. Lower villages such as 1550 and Le Praz, the original hamlet with its Olympic ski jumps, retain a quieter, traditional feel. The homes range from slopeside retreats with private pools and spas to residences within walking distance of the lifts and restaurants.

Things to do

In winter, Courchevel suits every level, from gentle green zones to the legendary Grand Couloir, one of the steepest marked runs in the Alps, and vast lift-accessed off-piste. The Courchevel valley alone offers around 150km of pistes and several snow parks, while a Three Valleys pass unlocks Meribel and Val Thorens for the most extensive linked skiing in the world. Beyond the slopes, try snowshoeing, tobogganing, a sightseeing flight from the altiport or a spa afternoon. In summer the lifts serve mountain bikers and walkers, with the Vanoise National Park a valley away, plus paragliding, climbing and golf beside the altiport, making this a genuine year-round destination rather than a purely seasonal one.

Dining and nightlife

No ski resort takes its kitchens more seriously: Courchevel holds a cluster of Michelin-starred restaurants alongside mountain refuges and atmospheric cafes, covering everything from haute gastronomy to a quick slopeside lunch. A local saying claims the higher the altitude, the better the cooking, and the standard across the resort lends it some truth. After dark the mood runs from discreet lounges to nightclubs that keep an international crowd out until the lifts reopen. When to visit and getting there

The ski season typically runs from December to April, with reliable cover thanks to the resort's altitude and northern exposure. Peak weeks around Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays are the liveliest and should be booked well ahead. Summer, from late June to early September, offers warm days for the mountains and far fewer visitors. Courchevel is unusually accessible: the altiport receives light aircraft and helicopters directly, one of the few in the Alps to do so, while Chambery, Lyon, Grenoble and Geneva airports lie within a scenic drive. Geneva is roughly two and a half hours by road, Chambery closer still.
