A French island of volcanoes, lagoons and cloud-high cirques in the Indian Ocean

Reunion is a French overseas department 700 km east of Madagascar, where an active volcano, three UNESCO-listed cirques and a coral-fringed west coast fit on one island the size of Luxembourg. A luxury villa here puts the lagoon beaches of Saint-Gilles and La Saline within minutes, with the Piton de la Fournaise, the Cirque de Mafate and the highlands of Cilaos and Salazie a morning's drive away — European infrastructure, Creole hospitality and no jet lag from Paris time.

Reunion through the seasons

  1. Winter (June – August)

Whales, clear peaks and cool hiking

The dry season brings the clearest views of the volcano and cirques, humpback whales in the lagoon and comfortable daytime temperatures for long hikes.

  2. Spring (September – November)

    Trail season and flowering highlands

The Grand Raid crosses the island in October, the highlands bloom and the sea is still calm before the summer heat arrives.

  3. Summer (December – February)

    Lagoon days and lychee season

Hot, humid days are made for the lagoon; lychees and mangoes fill the markets and the volcano often stages its eruptions.

  4. Autumn (March – May)

    Green cirques and quieter roads

After the rains the waterfalls in Salazie run full, the crowds thin and the shoulder-season rates make longer stays easy.

The Area and Where to Stay

The villas sit on the dry, sunny west coast between Saint-Paul and Saint-Leu, the only stretch of the island with reef-protected lagoons. Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is the resort centre with a marina and restaurants; L'Ermitage and La Saline-les-Bains are quieter, with the best swimming. The hills above the coast at Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts and Piton Saint-Leu offer cooler nights and ocean views. Saint-Denis, the capital, and the wild south around Saint-Pierre are day trips rather than bases.

Things to Do

Hike to the crater rim of the Piton de la Fournaise from the Pas de Bellecombe, or fly over the Cirque de Mafate by helicopter before walking into its villages. Drive the switchbacks to Cilaos for thermal springs and lentil farms, or to Hell-Bourg in Salazie, one of France's prettiest villages. On the coast, dive or snorkel the reef at L'Ermitage, paraglide from Saint-Leu, watch humpback whales between June and September, and surf the reef breaks at Saint-Leu and Trois-Bassins. The Sunday market in Saint-Paul and the Saga du Rhum distillery in Saint-Pierre make easy half-days.

Food and Drink

Reunion's Creole kitchen mixes Malagasy, Indian, Chinese and French roots: cari (curries) of chicken, duck or fish, rougail sausages, lentils from Cilaos, samosas and bouchons from the Chinese community, and vanilla from the east coast. Rum arrangé, infused with fruit and spices, closes most meals. The west coast has a good spread of restaurants from beach shacks at La Saline to tablecloth dining in Saint-Gilles.

Getting There and Around

Roland Garros airport is on the north coast, 40 to 60 minutes from the west-coast villas by the coastal motorway. A hire car is essential: distances are short but roads climb steeply into the cirques and the island's interior closes to traffic in heavy rain. Air Austral, Air France, Corsair and French Bee fly direct from Paris in about 11 hours; Air Mauritius links Mauritius in 45 minutes.
