McCall is a small resort town wrapped around the southern shore of Payette Lake, two and a half scenic hours north of Boise in Idaho's West Central Mountains. It pairs glassy summer lake days with deep, dry winter snow at Brundage Mountain, and a private villa or lodge here gives families a year-round basecamp with the water, the trails and the slopes all within minutes.

The Area and Where to Stay
McCall gathers around the southern end of Payette Lake at about 5,000 feet, a compact, friendly downtown of restaurants, outfitters and a marina backed by miles of national forest. Lakefront and lake-view homes along the eastern and western shores are the most coveted addresses, many with private docks and big decks facing the water. Ponderosa State Park occupies the peninsula that juts into the lake, so even central stays feel wrapped in pine forest. A short drive north, homes near Brundage Mountain suit dedicated skiers, while the surrounding valley, including the golf and lake communities south of town and neighbouring New Meadows, adds spacious lodges for larger groups. Our collection favours timber-and-stone homes with hot tubs, fire pits and room for the whole family, with concierge support for boats, lift tickets and guides.
Things to Do
Summer in McCall revolves around the water: swim, paddleboard and wakeboard on Payette Lake, rent a boat from the marina, or find a quiet cove along Ponderosa State Park's trails. Hikers and mountain bikers have hundreds of miles of forest routes, from gentle lakeshore paths to high-country lookouts, and the Payette and Salmon River country nearby offers superb whitewater rafting. Golfers can play the town's scenic courses through long mountain evenings. In winter, Brundage Mountain serves some of the American West's lightest, driest snow with rarely a lift queue, Tamarack Resort lies a half hour south, and the area grooms extensive Nordic trails. Year-round, soak in natural hot springs such as Burgdorf and Gold Fork, and let the concierge arrange charters, guides and snowmobile tours.
Food and Local Flavour
McCall eats like the mountain town it is: hearty, unpretentious and increasingly polished. Downtown holds lakefront dining rooms, craft breweries pouring after-adventure pints, coffee roasters and bakeries famous for their huckleberry treats, the wild berry that flavours everything from pancakes to ice cream across the Idaho high country. Steaks, trout and comfort food dominate menus, alongside a growing handful of chef-driven kitchens. In summer the farmers market brings Idaho produce to town, and in winter nothing beats dinner by the fire after a day at Brundage. Most villas come with generous kitchens and barbecue decks, and the concierge can arrange private chefs, provisioning before arrival and dinner reservations on the water.
When to Visit
McCall is genuinely two resorts in one. Summer, from June to September, brings warm, dry days in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, cool pine-scented evenings and a lake at its sparkling best; July and August are the liveliest weeks. Autumn is short and golden, with quiet trails and tamarack forests turning yellow in October. Winter arrives properly in December and holds through March, delivering the deep, dry snow the region is known for; late January's Winter Carnival fills town with ice sculptures and festivities, so book that week early. Spring is the quiet season, good-value and peaceful, with hot springs at their most atmospheric as the snow melts.
Getting There
Fly into Boise (BOI), Idaho's main airport with direct service from many US hubs, then drive about two and a half hours north on Highway 55, a beautiful route that follows the Payette River through canyon and forest to the lake. McCall Municipal Airport (MYL), beside downtown, handles private and charter aviation. A car is essential for reaching trailheads, hot springs and Brundage Mountain, and in winter a four-wheel-drive vehicle is a sensible choice. The concierge can arrange private transfers from Boise, rental cars delivered to your villa and boat or snowmobile hire ahead of your arrival.
