Indonesia stretches across more than seventeen thousand islands, yet for villa travellers the story begins in Bali, where Hindu temples, rice terraces and world-class surf meet an unmatched culture of private staffed homes. Renting a luxury villa here means daily housekeeping, private pools and often a personal chef, with a concierge to arrange everything from temple visits to boat charters.

What's on in Indonesia
- Late October
Ubud Writers & Readers Festival
Southeast Asia's leading literary festival draws authors and thinkers from around the world to Ubud for talks, readings and long lunches among the rice fields.
- March
Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence
Bali's Saka new year begins with ogoh-ogoh demon effigies paraded through every village at dusk, followed by a full day when the whole island falls silent, with no flights, traffic or lights. Experiencing it from a villa garden is unforgettable.
- Mid-June to mid-July
Bali Arts Festival
A month of gamelan, dance and craft from across the island, centred on the Denpasar arts centre. The opening parade is one of Bali's great spectacles.
- Twice yearly, on a 210-day cycle
Galungan and Kuningan
Bali's most important religious festival, when ancestral spirits are welcomed home and every road is lined with penjor, tall arched bamboo poles. Temples fill with offerings and processions for ten days.
Indonesia through the seasons
- Early dry season (April – June)
Green landscapes and calm seas
The rains ease, the rice terraces glow at their greenest and the island is quieter than in high season, ideal for touring temples and the Ubud valleys.
- Peak dry season (July – August)
Surf, kites and cloudless days
The driest, breeziest months bring the best surf to Uluwatu and Canggu and traditional kites to the skies above Sanur. Book villas well in advance.
- Late dry season (September – October)
Warm days without the crowds
Reliable sunshine continues while the high-season crowds thin, a favourite window for honeymooners and for the Ubud festival season.
- Wet season (November – March)
Spa days and dramatic skies
Short afternoon downpours refresh the island and prices soften. It is the season for in-villa massages, cooking classes and long pool days between bursts of sun.

The Area and Where to Stay
Bali is the heart of Indonesia's villa scene, and our collection concentrates on its most rewarding corners. South Kuta covers the Bukit peninsula, where Uluwatu's limestone cliffs hold some of the island's most spectacular ocean-view estates, close to famous surf breaks and the clifftop Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple. North Kuta means Canggu, Berawa and Umalas, a greener, more relaxed stretch where villas sit among rice paddies a short scooter ride from black-sand surf beaches. Seminyak offers polished beach-club living, while inland Ubud suits travellers drawn to jungle valleys, yoga and craft villages. Wherever you settle on the island, the Balinese villa tradition is genuinely exceptional: walled tropical gardens built around private pools, open-air living pavilions, and attentive household staff who make a week feel entirely effortless.
Things to Do
Bali rewards both energy and idleness. Surfers head for Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Canggu's beach breaks, while calmer waters at Sanur and Nusa Dua suit families. Inland, walk the Tegallalang and Jatiluwih rice terraces, climb Mount Batur for a sunrise over the caldera, or explore water temples such as Tirta Empul and the sea temple of Tanah Lot. Day trips run to Nusa Penida's dramatic coastline and the snorkelling reefs of the Gili Islands, and your concierge can arrange private boats, drivers and guides throughout. Balinese spa culture is among the best in the world, and most treatments, from massage to flower baths, can be delivered to your own villa. Cooking classes, artisan villages around Ubud and beach clubs along the Seminyak coast round out the days.
Food and Local Flavour
Balinese cooking is fragrant and generous: babi guling roast suckling pig, bebek betutu slow-cooked duck, sate lilit minced seafood satay and nasi campur plates built around rice and a dozen small dishes. Warungs, the island's simple family kitchens, serve some of the best food at the most modest prices, while Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu have grown into genuinely cosmopolitan dining destinations with ocean-view restaurants and beach clubs. The villa tradition adds its own pleasure: most staffed homes offer in-villa chefs who shop the morning markets and cook Indonesian or Western menus to order, and your concierge can arrange a floating breakfast in the pool or a private barbecue at sunset.
When to Visit
Bali sits just south of the equator, so temperatures hold near 30 degrees all year and the real variable is rain. The dry season runs from April to October, with July and August the coolest, driest and busiest months, ideal for surf, volcano hikes and beach days. The wet season, November to March, brings short tropical downpours, greener landscapes and quieter beaches, and remains a rewarding time for spa-focused or cultural stays. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence in March, closes the entire island for one remarkable day, worth planning around rather than avoiding. Book well ahead for July, August and the Christmas and New Year weeks.
Getting There
Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) sits between Kuta and Jimbaran and is served by direct flights from across Asia, Australia and the Gulf, with one-stop connections from Europe via hubs such as Singapore, Doha and Dubai. Transfers are short: around thirty minutes to Uluwatu or Seminyak, forty five to Canggu and roughly ninety to Ubud, though traffic can stretch journeys. Most guests rely on private drivers rather than hire cars, and your concierge can arrange airport transfers, day drivers and fast boats to Nusa Penida, Lombok and the Gili Islands.
