What's on in Marbella
- March or April
Semana Santa
Holy Week processions wind through Marbella's old town, while nearby Málaga stages some of Andalusia's grandest, with vast thrones carried through packed streets. A moving start to the spring season.
- Early June
Feria de San Bernabé
Marbella's week-long fair honours its patron saint with flamenco dresses, horses, casetas and fireworks, split between the old town by day and the fairground by night. The town at its most Andalusian.
- Mid June to late August
Starlite Occident Festival
International stars play an intimate quarry auditorium at Cantera de Nagüeles in the hills above Marbella across a summer-long programme. Concerts finish late, so a villa minutes away beats a long drive home.
- 16 July
Virgen del Carmen
The patroness of fishermen is carried to the sea in candlelit processions along the coast, with flotillas of decorated boats off Marbella and neighbouring ports. Watch from a beachfront chiringuito at sunset.
Marbella through the seasons
- Spring (March – May)
Golf, blossom and warm terraces
The Golden Mile and the courses of the Golf Valley are at their best in mild spring sunshine, and terrace lunches return to the old town. A favourite season for golfers and couples.
- Summer (June – August)
Beach clubs and long villa evenings
Puerto Banús and the beach clubs hit full swing, and days settle into a rhythm of pool, beach and late dinners. Villas with private pools and shaded terraces come into their own.
- Autumn (September – November)
Warm seas and empty fairways
The sea stays warm into October while crowds fade, and golfers reclaim the fairways in perfect temperatures. An excellent time for larger family gatherings at villa prices worth asking about.
- Winter (December – February)
Sunshine winter on the Costa del Sol
With over 300 days of sun a year, winter brings mild hiking weather in the Sierra Blanca and quiet, glamorous streets. Some of Europe's most reliable winter sunshine within a short flight.

The Area
Once a quiet fishing village, Marbella has grown into one of the Mediterranean's most polished resorts while keeping its Andalusian soul. The whitewashed Old Town, with its narrow lanes and the orange-tree-lined Plaza de los Naranjos, sits a short stroll from the seafront promenade. Behind the coast rises La Concha mountain, sheltering the so-called Golden Mile and the marina district of Puerto Banus. Inland villages such as Benahavis and the wider Sierra de las Nieves offer a calmer, greener counterpoint. Luxury villas in Marbella range from contemporary glass-fronted retreats with infinity pools to classic Andalusian cortijos set among gardens, giving guests both privacy and quick access to the town's glamour.
Where to Stay
Choosing where to base yourself shapes the holiday. The Golden Mile, between Marbella town and Puerto Banus, blends prestige addresses with easy beach access. Puerto Banus suits those who want yachts, designer boutiques and late nights on the doorstep. Families and golfers often prefer the gated estates of Nueva Andalucia or the hillside village of Benahavis, prized for fine dining and views. For quiet seclusion, look towards inland Andalusia near Igualeja and the Sierra de las Nieves. Smiling House lists more than 210 villas here, concentrated in Marbella itself and Benahavis with further homes along the Costa del Sol — most with private pools, many staffed, and all with concierge support arranged before you arrive.
Things to Do
Golf defines much of Marbella, with more than thirty courses within easy reach, and Los Naranjos, La Quinta and Real Club de Golf Las Brisas among the best known in Nueva Andalucia's Golf Valley. Beyond the fairways, the coast delivers beach clubs, watersports and long sandy stretches. Culture sits closer than the party reputation suggests: the Museo del Grabado Espanol Contemporaneo, housed in the sixteenth-century Hospital Bazan, holds prints by Picasso, Miro and Dali, while the Museo Ralli shows European and Latin American art. The Bonsai Museum in Parque Arroyo de la Represa makes a serene half-hour. A short drive reaches Puerto Banus for super-yacht spotting and designer shopping, while the hills above Benahavis reward walkers and food enthusiasts alike.
Dining & Nightlife
Marbella eats exceptionally well. Acclaimed chefs have turned the resort into a serious dining destination, reworking traditional Spanish dishes with contemporary flair alongside simple chiringuito grills on the sand. Benahavis, often called the dining hub of the coast, draws gourmets to its village restaurants. After dark, Marbella earns its reputation as a party town, with glamorous beach clubs, marina bars in Puerto Banus and late-night venues. In the Old Town, the lamplit Plaza de los Naranjos fills with tapas, live music and the occasional flamenco performance, offering a more intimate alternative to the high-energy clubs along the coast.
When to Visit
Marbella enjoys a famously mild micro-climate with sunshine across much of the year. High summer, from June to September, brings hot days made for the pool, the beach and long evenings, and is ideal for families travelling in the school holidays. Spring and autumn suit golfers and walkers, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds on the courses and in the Old Town. Even winter stays gentle, appealing to sun-seekers and those combining golf with relaxation. Whenever you come, a private villa with a heated pool extends the season comfortably.
Getting There
Marbella is reached most easily through Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport, around 45 minutes away by road and served by direct flights from across Europe. The A-7 coastal road and AP-7 toll motorway link the airport to Marbella, Puerto Banus and the inland villages, so a private transfer or hire car makes light work of the journey. Gibraltar Airport offers an alternative from the west. Once settled, having a car helps for reaching golf clubs, Benahavis, Igualeja and the wider Andalusian countryside, though Smiling House can arrange transfers, drivers and concierge logistics as part of your villa booking.
