Between June and November, southern right whales gather off Hermanus, some of the best land-based whale watching on Earth. Further afield, the Garden Route threads forests, lagoons and beaches towards Plettenberg Bay, and a short flight connects you to Big Five safaris in the Kruger's private reserves. Food and Local Flavour

South Africa's Cape is one of the world's great eating and drinking destinations. Cape Town's restaurant scene ranges from fire-driven fine dining to harbourside seafood, with the V&A Waterfront, Kloof Street and the Old Biscuit Mill among its liveliest quarters. The Winelands add centuries-old estates where tasting rooms and celebrated restaurants sit among the vines; Franschhoek in particular has earned its reputation as the country's gourmet capital. When to Visit

South Africa's seasons are inverted from Europe's, and the country rewards visits year-round. Cape Town's summer, November to March, brings hot, dry, blue-sky days made for beaches and outdoor dining, with December and January the peak festive weeks. Autumn, April and May, is harvest time in the Winelands and beautifully calm. Winter, June to August, is the Cape's green, rainy season but the best time for safari in the north, where dry bush concentrates game at waterholes; it also opens the whale season at Hermanus, which peaks in September and October alongside the west coast's famous spring wildflowers. Combining Cape summer with safari means a trade-off either way, and the concierge can advise the best routing for your dates.

Getting There

Cape Town International (CPT) is the gateway to the villa heartland, with direct flights from London and other European hubs, most of them overnight, and the near-identical time zone means no jet lag. Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB) is the main long-haul hub and the springboard for safari flights into the Kruger reserves. Domestic connections between the two cities are frequent and short. Within the Cape, a hire car is the pleasant way to reach the Winelands and Whale Coast on good roads, though most guests rely on private drivers arranged by the concierge, who can also book helicopter transfers and light-aircraft safari connections.
