What's on in Sardinia
- 1 May
Festa di Sant'Efisio
Cagliari's devotional procession, held every year since 1657, brings thousands in traditional dress, decorated ox-carts and horsemen through flower-strewn streets. Sardinia's grandest festival.
- Second-to-last Sunday of May
Cavalcata Sarda
Sassari hosts a magnificent parade of riders and costumed groups from across the island, followed by daring displays of horsemanship. A showcase of Sardinia's living folk traditions.
- Early July
S'Ardia di Sedilo
A breathtaking and ancient horse race around the sanctuary of San Costantino in Sedilo, commemorating Constantine's victory at the Milvian Bridge. Raw, fearless and unforgettable.
- Mid August
Time in Jazz
Trumpeter Paolo Fresu's acclaimed festival fills his home town of Berchidda and surrounding villages with concerts in squares, churches and countryside settings.
- September to December
Autunno in Barbagia
The mountain villages of the Barbagia open their courtyards over successive weekends for artisan crafts, cellar tastings and traditional cooking. The inland island at its most authentic.
Sardinia through the seasons
- Spring (March – May)
Wildflowers and festival season
The maquis blooms, temperatures suit hiking the Supramonte and coast paths, and the island's great processions fill the calendar. Beautiful weeks before the beach crowds arrive.
- Summer (June – August)
The Costa Smeralda in full swing
Turquoise coves from Porto Cervo to Chia, yacht life and long beach days. A private-pool villa near the coast gives you the emerald water without the beach-club queues.
- Autumn (September – October)
Warm seas and the vendemmia
The sea stays swimmable into October while Cannonau and Vermentino harvests animate the wineries. Quieter roads make it the ideal season for touring the island.
- Winter (November – February)
Mild coasts and mountain traditions
Sunny, gentle winter days on the coast and, in January and February, the haunting Mamuthones carnival masks of Mamoiada in the interior. Sardinia for travellers, not tourists.

The Area
Sardinia is the Mediterranean's second-largest island, lying off the west coast of the Italian mainland and just south of Corsica. Its draw is a varied, spectacular coastline that runs from hidden coves to wild natural beaches, framing some of the clearest waters in Europe. The most celebrated stretch is the Emerald Coast, or Costa Smeralda, a glamorous enclave that gathers super yachts and an international set each summer. Inland, the landscape turns rugged and untouched, with granite mountains, vineyards and centuries-old villages. It is this contrast — polished coast, wild interior — that brings travellers back to the same sheltered bays year after year.
Where to Stay
Choosing the right base shapes the whole holiday. The Costa Smeralda area suits those who want designer boutiques, marina glamour and lively evenings within easy reach. For quieter, family-friendly days, the southern coast around Pula and Santa Margherita di Pula offers long pine-backed sandy beaches, with the Phoenician and Roman ruins of Nora on a headland minutes away. Our collection of more than 220 luxury villas in Sardinia spans these settings, from clifftop retreats with infinity pools and sea views to secluded estates set among olive groves and macchia. Many homes come with generous outdoor living, private gardens and direct or near-direct beach access. Concierge service can arrange chefs, transfers and yacht charters so the property becomes a true private base.
Things to Do
Water defines the Sardinian day. Swim in warm, transparent seas, dive the reefs, or charter a boat to the granite islets of the La Maddalena archipelago in the north. On land, the Nuraghi are unmissable: megalithic conical stone towers from the Nuragic Age, between roughly 1900 and 730 BC, with over 7,000 scattered across the island, so one is rarely far from your villa. The island's culinary heritage opens up vineyard visits, wine tastings and hands-on pasta-making sessions. Folk traditions run deep here, and colourful festivals featuring centuries-old dances in traditional dress appear throughout the calendar, offering a window into a culture fiercely bound to its heritage.
Dining and Nightlife
Sardinia balances international cuisine with deeply rooted local cooking. For the most authentic experience, dine at an agriturismo, a family farm where there is no fixed menu and a continuous procession of dishes made from home-grown produce arrives at the table. Try pecorino made from sheep's milk, slow-roasted suckling pig, saffron-tinted malloreddus pasta, and seadas, fresh cheese drizzled with honey. The island is a serious wine region: Cannonau leads, alongside Vermentino di Gallura, Nuragus and Vernaccia, with a chilled Mirto liqueur to close. Nightlife is mostly laid-back, built around a sunset aperitivo, though the upmarket bars of Costa Smeralda bring later, more glamorous evenings.
When to Visit and Getting There
The season runs from May to early October. June and September deliver warm seas and calmer beaches, while July and August are peak months for sunshine, social energy and Costa Smeralda glamour. Spring and autumn suit walkers, wine lovers and those seeking quieter coves. Getting to the island is straightforward: Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport serves the north-east and the Emerald Coast, Cagliari covers the south and the beaches around Pula, and Alghero serves the west. Seasonal flights connect major European cities, and ferries link Sardinia to the Italian mainland and Corsica. A hire car is the best way to reach secluded beaches and inland villages, and concierge can pre-arrange transfers.
