The Area and Where to Stay

Ticino gathers around two great lakes. On Lake Maggiore, Ascona is the best-known address: a car-free lakefront of ochre facades, cafés and galleries, with Locarno and its Piazza Grande next door. Villas in the hills above, around villages such as Cavigliano at the mouth of the Centovalli, enjoy long lake and valley views. To the south, Lugano is the canton's lively hub, its bay ringed by Monte Brè and San Salvatore; Bissone and the villages of the Ceresio shoreline offer waterside quiet, while Cademario and Caslano sit in the sunny hills and on the lake's rural western arm. Things to Do

Funiculars and cable cars climb Monte Brè, San Salvatore and Cardada for balcony views over the lakes and Alps. Inland, the Verzasca and Maggia valleys hold emerald rivers, stone villages and the famous double-arched bridge at Lavertezzo, while the Centovalli railway threads a spectacular gorge towards Domodossola. Culture ranges from Lugano's LAC arts centre to the hill-top churches above Locarno, and golfers have the historic course at Ascona. Food and Local Flavour

Ticino eats like Italy and organises like Switzerland. When to Visit

Ticino is the sunniest corner of Switzerland, and its season is long. May and June bring warm days, flowering gardens and quiet trails; July and August are peak lake weather, with swimming, festivals and long evenings on the promenades. September and October are superb: warm light, grape harvest, chestnut season and thinner crowds. Even winter has its charm, mild by Swiss standards, with clear views and Christmas markets in the towns. Spring starts early here, when camellias and magnolias bloom around Locarno while snow still caps the peaks. For classic villa weather, aim for May to early October.

Getting There

Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the most practical gateway, roughly an hour's drive from Lugano and not much more to Ascona and Locarno. From Zurich (ZRH), the Gotthard rail line reaches Lugano in about two hours, one of Europe's great scenic journeys, and the motorway follows the same corridor through the base tunnel. Within the canton, driving is easy and distances short, though lake steamers and funiculars are part of the pleasure.
