What's on in French Alps Ski Resorts

  1. Mid December

    Critérium de la Première Neige

Val d'Isère opens the French World Cup ski season across two December weekends, the men's technical races run on the fearsome Face de Bellevarde. A thrilling early-winter spectacle before the Christmas rush.

  2. Mid July

    Jumping International de Megève

International show jumping arrives on the Esplanade du Palais, with evening competitions, village festivities and free access for spectators. Megève at its most convivial.

  3. Late July

    Cosmojazz Festival, Chamonix

Chamonix's free jazz festival stages daytime concerts at altitude — mountain terraces and lakesides reached by lift — with evening sets in town. Bring walking boots and a picnic.

  4. July

    Tour de France Alpine Stages

Most years the Tour tackles the great Alpine climbs — the Col de la Loze above Courchevel and Méribel among the most feared of them. Watching from a col-side picnic is a summer day worth planning a stay around.

  5. Mid August

    Fête des Guides, Chamonix

Chamonix honours its mountain guides with ceremonies, mountain demonstrations and fireworks beneath Mont Blanc. The emotional heart of the alpine summer season.

French Alps Ski Resorts through the seasons

  1. Winter (December – April)

    The world's largest ski areas

Les Trois Vallées and the high slopes Val d'Isère shares with Tignes offer endless linked pistes from ski-in ski-out chalets. Courchevel, Méribel and Val d'Isère set the standard for catered luxury.

  2. Spring (May – June)

    Glacier snow and empty valleys

Late glacier skiing gives way to wildflower meadows and quiet village life. A serene, good-value window before the summer lifts open.

  3. Summer (July – August)

    High-alpine hiking and cycling cols

Lift-served hiking, mountain biking and the Tour de France's mythical climbs. Chalets with hot tubs and terraces are made for warm alpine evenings.

  4. Autumn (September – November)

    Golden forests before the snow

Larch forests turn gold, trails stay open and the resorts breathe between seasons. The quietest time to enjoy alpine scenery and hearty Savoyard food.

The Area

The French Alps rise along the country's eastern border to Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest summit at over 4,800 metres. Our resorts sit in two clusters. In the Tarentaise, Courchevel, Méribel and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville share Les Trois Vallées, the world's largest linked ski area, while Val d'Isère pairs with Tignes in a high, snow-sure domain of glacier runs and long descents. To the north, Megève and Chamonix face Mont Blanc itself — the first a Belle Époque village of horse-drawn calèches and couture, the second the birthplace of alpinism. Between them, these six resorts cover every register of an alpine holiday, from pampered ski-in ski-out weeks to glacier mountaineering.

Where to Stay in Luxury Chalets

Courchevel 1850 is the collection's showpiece: some 370 chalets and apartments sit in and around the resort, many ski-in ski-out and minutes from the designer boutiques near La Croisette, the central lift hub. Méribel, at the geographic centre of Les Trois Vallées, is the family choice, its chalet-style architecture threaded through larch woods. Saint-Martin-de-Belleville offers the same lift system from a genuine Savoyard farming village that falls quiet when the day-trippers leave. Val d'Isère suits committed skiers who want altitude and a long season; Megève rewards those who ski a little and dine well; Chamonix draws alpinists and anyone who prefers a real year-round town. Many chalets feature private spas, pools and cinema rooms, with staffed and catered options through the winter.

Things to Do

Winter is defined by the linked domains: terrain for every level, tree-lined runs above Méribel, couloirs off Courchevel's Saulire and the Face de Bellevarde above Val d'Isère. Beyond the pistes there is snowshoeing, cross-country, husky sledding, paragliding and serious spa time. Chamonix adds the Aiguille du Midi cable car, rising to 3,842 metres opposite Mont Blanc, and the Mer de Glace glacier. In summer the same lifts serve hikers and mountain bikers, with golf at Megève and Chamonix, via ferrata and lake swimming in the valleys. A concierge can arrange private instructors, mountain guides, heli-experiences and family-friendly outings in either season.

Dining & Nightlife

Nowhere in the mountains concentrates fine dining like this: Courchevel alone holds a cluster of Michelin-starred tables, with more in Megève and Chamonix. Savoyard classics — fondue, raclette, tartiflette — are best in mountainside farm restaurants reached by ski or snowcat. Après-ski runs from champagne terraces in Courchevel 1850 to Val d'Isère's famously energetic bar scene, while Megève keeps things elegant and Chamonix balances mountaineering grit with cosmopolitan cafés. In Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, dinner tends to mean a long table in the chalet. A private chef can recreate gastronomic menus at home, and concierge teams secure the hardest reservations of the winter.

When to Visit

The season runs from mid-December to mid-April, peaking over Christmas, New Year and February half-term, when the best chalets are reserved up to a year ahead. Val d'Isère's high, largely north-facing slopes keep their snow late, and its World Cup opening weekend in mid-December is a lively start to winter. January and late March reward flexible travellers with quieter pistes and gentler rates. From June to September the region swaps skis for boots and bikes, with lifts running in every resort; late spring and autumn suit those who want the mountains almost to themselves, though some lifts and venues close between seasons.

Getting There

Geneva is the most practical airport for Chamonix and Megève — a little over an hour's drive — and works for the Tarentaise too, alongside Lyon, Chambéry and Grenoble. By rail, the TGV connects Paris to Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice at the foot of the Tarentaise resorts, and Eurostar's seasonal Snow service links London to the same stations with one change in Lille. Transfers climb the mountain roads to each village, and a Smiling House concierge can coordinate private cars, helicopter shuttles, ski hire and lift passes so the journey ends at your chalet door with the skis already waiting.
