The Area

Val d'Isere sits at 1,850 metres at the head of the Tarentaise valley, the last village before the Col de l'Iseran and the Italian border. Together with neighbouring Tignes it forms one of Europe's largest and most reliable ski domains, marketed for decades as the Espace Killy after the local triple Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy. The village keeps a traditional Savoyard core of stone and timber around its baroque church, yet the atmosphere is polished and cosmopolitan. Altitude and glacier terrain make the skiing genuinely snow-sure from late November into May, which is why serious skiers return season after season, and why the resort ranks among the most prestigious in the Alps.

Things to Do

Skiing and snowboarding are the heart of Val d'Isere, with 300 kilometres of linked pistes spanning gentle nursery slopes to the formidable Face de Bellevarde, cut for the 1992 Albertville Olympic downhill. Racers can trace the Oreiller-Killy piste at La Daille, named for the resort's two Olympic champions, while guides open up some of the Alps' most celebrated off-piste and heliskiing operates just over the border in Italy. Non-skiers can enjoy the aquatic and wellness centre, ice driving, snowshoeing and paragliding over the valley. In the warmer months the village becomes a base for hiking and biking in the Vanoise, and road cyclists tackle the Col de l'Iseran, Europe's highest paved pass.

Dining & Nightlife

Val d'Isere has a deserved reputation for fine dining, from traditional mountain restaurants serving fondue, raclette and tartiflette to refined establishments with creative Alpine menus. On-mountain lunch spots reward a day's skiing with sun-soaked terraces and long lazy meals. The village itself is compact and walkable, with intimate bars, wine cellars and some of the Alps' liveliest apres-ski as the lifts close. Evenings can be as spirited or as relaxed as you wish. Many guests choose to dine in, where a private chef can prepare anything from a rustic Savoyard feast to a multi-course tasting menu, served beside the fire.

When to Visit

The main season runs from late November or early December through to early May, longer than almost anywhere in France thanks to the altitude and glacier terrain. December opens with the Criterium de la Premiere Neige and festive weeks, while January and February offer deep midwinter snow and quieter stretches between the holidays. March and April reward visitors with longer, sunnier days and excellent spring skiing on a still-substantial snowpack. The Christmas, New Year and February half-term periods are the busiest and most coveted, so booking a chalet well in advance is strongly recommended for these peak weeks.

Getting There

Val d'Isere is reached by road transfer from several international gateways. Geneva is the most popular airport, roughly three hours by car, while Lyon, Chambery and Grenoble offer alternative approaches, the latter two often shorter in good conditions. Rail travellers can take the train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, around half an hour from the resort, with onward transfers up the mountain road. The final ascent climbs through the gorge above the Lac du Chevril before the village appears among the high peaks.
