The Area and Where to Stay

Saint Barts is small enough to cross in twenty minutes, so location is about mood rather than distance. Gustavia, the harbour capital whose name recalls a century of Swedish rule, puts you steps from boutiques, waterfront restaurants and the little crescent of Shell Beach. St Jean is the lively heart, its beach bracketed by the airstrip and a string of beach clubs, while Gouverneur, Saline and Colombier keep wilder, quieter sands. Most of our homes climb the hillsides above these bays and the rural heights of Vitet and Toiny, trading beachfront for privacy, breeze and views that run to neighbouring islets. Things to Do

Days revolve around the water. Swim and snorkel the calm coves of the island's protected marine reserve, charter a boat for lunch off Colombier, or walk the ten-minute path down to that beach, which no road reaches. Surfers paddle out at Lorient and Toiny, and divers work the reefs and wrecks offshore. On land, Gustavia rewards slow exploration: designer boutiques along the quays, the ruins of Fort Karl above Shell Beach, and sunset drinks facing a harbour of superyachts. Corossol, a tiny fishing village where locals still weave palm fronds, shows the island as it was. Your concierge can arrange charters, diving, tennis, spa treatments and tables at the spots that book out weeks ahead.

Food and Local Flavour

For its size, Saint Barts has one of the Caribbean's most serious dining scenes, blending classic French technique with Creole flavours and just-caught seafood. Expect polished harbour restaurants, long-running beach clubs on St Jean and Saline, and wine lists shipped in from France. Each November the Gourmet Festival brings visiting Michelin-starred chefs into island kitchens for a week. A private chef in your villa is the favourite alternative: island fish and French produce cooked metres from your pool, with the concierge securing the hardest reservations for the nights you do go out.

When to Visit

The high season runs December to April, with warm, dry days, steady trade winds and the island at its most glamorous around the holidays, when the harbour fills for New Year. Spring into early summer stays sunny with thinner crowds and better value. Late August brings the Fete de Saint-Barthelemy, the island's patronal festival, and the quietest weeks follow through hurricane season, when some restaurants close in September before the Gourmet Festival stirs everything back to life in November.

Getting There

Most travellers fly long-haul into St Maarten (SXM), then take a light-aircraft hop of around fifteen minutes to Gustaf III Airport (SBH) or a ferry crossing to Gustavia. The landing is famously dramatic: pilots crest the saddle of the Col de la Tourmente and drop onto one of the world's shortest commercial runways, which is why only small planes serve the island and why connections should be booked early in high season. On the ground, a hire car or open-sided Mini-Moke suits the steep lanes between beaches, and the concierge can arrange transfers, charters and private aviation door to door.
