The Area and Where to Stay

Things to Do

Summer days drift between the beach clubs of Pampelonne, boat trips along the coves of the Cap and long lunches in the hills. In town, climb to the seventeenth-century Citadel for the best view over the gulf and its museum of maritime history, then drop down to the Annonciade, the small museum that shows why Signac and the painters who followed him made this port famous long before the yachts arrived. The Place des Lices market fills the square on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, petanque takes it over the rest of the week, and the Sentier du Littoral traces the shoreline from the town beaches right around the peninsula's capes. Your concierge can arrange charters, club reservations, tennis, golf and private tastings at the peninsula's wine estates.

Food and Local Flavour

Dining ranges from Michelin-starred tables to harbour bistros and beach-club restaurants serving Provencal seafood with the peninsula's own Cotes de Provence rose, poured from the vineyards of Ramatuelle and Gassin you can see from many villa terraces. Market stalls brim with olive oil, tapenade and the tarte tropezienne, the cream-filled brioche invented in the town in the 1950s and still its signature sweet. A private chef is the relaxed way to enjoy all of it beside your own pool, while the concierge secures the summer reservations that otherwise vanish months ahead.

When to Visit

The season runs May to September. July and August are the busiest and most glamorous, with the beach clubs in full swing and dinners running past midnight. June and September are the sweet spots: warm sea, long days and a calmer pace, with Les Voiles filling the gulf with classic yachts as September closes. Spring belongs to the Bravades and the market squares; in winter the port returns to its fishing-village self, all quiet quaysides, coastal walks and long lunches in the low Provencal light.

Getting There

Most guests fly into Nice Cote d'Azur (NCE), around an hour and a half by road and longer in high summer, or into Toulon-Hyeres (TLN), which is closer. Private aviation lands at La Mole, the small airfield in the hills minutes from town, and helicopters shuttle from Nice and Monaco in season. Arriving by sea is a Saint-Tropez tradition in itself, and in July and August it is often the smartest route: the single peninsula road can crawl, so the concierge will happily arrange boat transfers alongside chauffeured cars and charters.
