A true Savoyard town at the heart of the Portes du Soleil
Morzine is a year-round mountain town in the Haute-Savoie, barely an hour and a quarter from Geneva and set at the centre of the Portes du Soleil, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. A private chalet here, with hot tub, fireplace and concierge, works as hard in the mountain-biking summer as it does in the depths of the ski season.

The Area and Where to Stay
Unlike purpose-built ski stations, Morzine is a proper Savoyard town that happens to sit in extraordinary terrain. Slate-roofed chalets, a river through the centre and a genuine year-round community give it a warmth many resorts lack, while lifts rise on both sides of the valley: the Pleney towards Les Gets and the Super Morzine towards Avoriaz and the Swiss sectors. Luxury chalets cluster on the sunny slopes above town and in the quieter satellite villages, Montriond with its emerald lake and the elevated hamlet of La Côte-d'Arbroz among them, offering seclusion within minutes of the lifts. Most feature hot tubs, boot rooms, fireplaces and big social dining spaces built for groups. Whether you want ski-back convenience or a hideaway with valley views, the Morzine area delivers both, with in-resort concierge and driver services smoothing every day.
Things to Do
In winter the Portes du Soleil is the playground: around 600 kilometres of pistes across twelve French and Swiss resorts, all on one pass, from Morzine's tree-lined home runs to Avoriaz's high snow-sure bowls and the famous Swiss Wall above Châtel's valley. Off the slopes there is night sledging, snowshoeing, ice skating and some of the Alps' best après. Summer transforms the town into one of Europe's mountain-biking capitals, with lift-served downhill and enduro trails fanning out across the whole area, plus the Pass'Portes du Soleil festival in late June. Hikers head for the Nyon plateau, Lac de Montriond and the Ardent waterfall; road cyclists tackle Tour de France climbs like the Col de Joux Plane; families fill days with white-water rafting on the Dranse, high ropes and lake swimming. Your concierge arranges guides, instructors, passes and equipment.
Food and Local Flavour
Morzine eats like the Savoie: raclette scraped at the table, bubbling fondue, tartiflette rich with reblochon and local charcuterie, best after a day in cold air. The valley's own Abondance cheese, made in the neighbouring alpine valleys, anchors many menus, and the weekly market fills the town with mountain cheeses, saucisson, honey and bread for chalet lunches. The dining scene runs from mountain refuges serving long slope-side lunches to refined chalet-style restaurants in town, with lively après bars in between. Many guests make the most of their chalet instead: private chefs and catered service are a Morzine speciality, turning dinner into the social heart of a ski or bike week. The concierge can book the best tables, arrange in-chalet raclette evenings and stock the fridge before you arrive.
When to Visit
Morzine runs two genuine seasons. Ski season lasts from December to April; the town's orientation keeps its tree-lined runs charming in storms, while the lift up to Avoriaz at 1,800 metres secures snow later into spring. February half-terms are the busiest and most sociable weeks, January the quietest with the coldest snow, and March brings long sunny days and the Rock the Pistes festival. Summer, from late June to early September, is remarkably lively: bike lifts spin daily, the lake at Montriond warms enough for swimming and the town buzzes with festivals. June and September are peaceful and green, ideal for hikers, while November and May are quiet between-season months when much of the town rests.
Getting There
Geneva (GVA) is the gateway, one of Europe's best-connected airports and only around 75 to 90 minutes from Morzine by motorway and valley road, one of the shortest airport transfers of any major Alpine resort. Shared and private transfers run all winter, and our concierge can arrange a private driver to meet any flight. By rail, TGV services reach Cluses and Thonon-les-Bains, each around 30 to 40 minutes away by taxi. Drivers from the UK can reach Morzine in about nine hours from Calais. In town, free shuttle buses link the lift bases, so a car is optional once you have arrived.
