The Area and Where to Stay

Things to Do
Summer in Maine is lived on the water. On the Belgrade Lakes that means swimming off the dock, kayaking at dawn, fishing for bass and evening boat runs for ice cream. On the coast, sail out of Camden on a windjammer, tour lighthouses such as Portland Head Light, or paddle the tidal creeks behind the southern beaches. Acadia National Park delivers the big set pieces: the Park Loop Road, Cadillac Mountain sunrises and carriage-road cycling. Golfers have coastal and lakeside courses, antique shops line Route 1, and Portland offers museums and a lively working waterfront. Your concierge can arrange boat charters, fishing guides, lobster bakes on the shore and day trips to Acadia. In winter, Sugarloaf and Sunday River add serious skiing within striking distance.
Food and Local Flavour

When to Visit
High summer, from late June to August, is Maine at full tilt: warm lake water, harbour towns in bloom and sunsets past nine o'clock. September brings quieter roads, crisp, clear days and lake water still warm enough to swim, then late September to mid-October sets the forests ablaze for fall foliage, one of the great American spectacles. Winter turns the state inward, with skiing at Sugarloaf and Sunday River and snow-quiet lake houses for those who love a fire. Spring is low-key mud season and best avoided. For a classic villa stay, book summer early, as waterfront weeks are the first to go.
Getting There
Portland International Jetport (PWM) is the most convenient gateway, roughly forty minutes from the southern beaches and a little over an hour from the Belgrade Lakes, with nonstop flights from major East Coast hubs. Bangor (BGR) works better for Acadia and points Downeast. Many visitors simply drive: Boston Logan (BOS) is about two hours from the southern coast on Interstate 95. A car is essential everywhere in Maine, and the concierge can arrange private transfers, boat deliveries to lakefront homes and grocery provisioning so the house is ready when you pull in.
